SESSION 2: “Beginning of Popular Urban Music”
During the XVIII
and XIX centuries, a large number of African black people were transported, as
slaves, to North America to work on plantations of tobacco, sugar or cotton. Their
religion was prohibited because slaves were originally thought of as not having
souls; as a consequence they had to turn their beliefs into Christian.
