SESSION 3: “Blues”

Originated at the end of the 19th century in the “Deep South” of North America. This gender of music comes from work and spiritual songs.

The term “blues” often refers to melancholy and sadness. The lyrics talk about trouble experiences, bad luck, and regret.

·        Instruments used in Blues:

Guitar, Bass guitar, Piano, Harmonica, Drums, saxophone, Vocals, Trumpet, Trombone,…

·        Characteristics:

ü Is a cycling musical form in which repeating progression of chords.

ü Use a difference musical scale from the “pentatonic scale”.

ü Songs talk about religion, poverty, and lovelessness.

Examples:

The Beginning of Popular Urban Music

Here you have the first lesson of the main topic for this year. We have been talking about the beginnings of popular urban music in USA.

I leave you the notes of this first lesson and some videos to listen and watch.

 SESSION 2: “Beginning of Popular Urban Music”

During the XVIII and XIX centuries, a large number of African black people were transported, as slaves, to North America to work on plantations of tobacco, sugar or cotton. Their religion was prohibited because slaves were originally thought of as not having souls; as a consequence they had to turn their beliefs into Christian.

·        WORK SONG

ü Was the first gender of music “created” by Blacks in America.

ü Founded on African music principles

ü Unaccompanied.

ü Solo voice with choral response.

ü Usually slow with lyrics in reference to work

Examples: “I will be so glad when the sun goes down” “Rosie”

·        SPIRITUAL SONG

ü The lyrics contain Christian’s references.

ü Talk about suffering and beyond.

ü Short sentences with a lot of repetitions.

ü Founded on African music principles.
